TV Recap – I Am The Night – We Know What Monsters Are …

I Am The Night
“Queen’s Gambit, Accepted” (Episode 106)
March 4, 2019

Last week on I Am The Night, Jay and Fauna made it to Hawaii and found Fauna’s mother, Tamar.  Annnnd Tamar is just as cray cray as she’s been portrayed all along but in fairness, how normal can you be when your Dad slept with you and you had his kid? It’s all very Jerry Springer … or maybe Maury should be involved? Consequently, Fauna is devastated by the news and feels betrayed by Jay because he knew the truth about her father all along. Jay is betrayed by Peter. And WTF is up with George? He traveled to Nevada to stab Jimmie Lee in a terrifying scene showing all his homicidal predilections. At the end of last week, we don’t know if Jimmie Lee is alive or dead.

TV Recap: I Am The Night – “Memento Quo Nunc Es”

I Am The Night
“Aloha” (Episode 105)
February 25, 2019

In Episode 4 of I Am The Night, major, major shit went down. By standing up to Jimmie Lee and striking a deal with Jay to get to Tamar in Hawaii, Fauna has (finally) decided to be an active participant in her own story. Sepp tried to kill Fauna and Jay skewered him for his troubles … with a wrench! Jay found an art gallery where the works were property of George Hodel and he was able to, in a spectacular piece of editing, musical composure, and acting, put together that George Hodel’s art matched crime scene photos from both Janis Brewster and Elizabeth Short, the infamous Black Dahlia murder.

I Am The Night
“Matador” (Episode 104)
February 18, 2019

Last week on I Am The Night, Jay discovered (disgusting) similarities between the Janis Brewster case and the Black Dahlia murder. Unfortunately, Jay’s obsession with the Hodel case landed him in the slammer where the LAPD almost extracted an eye. Fauna did some light B&E in her step-grandma’s house, and realized the creepy dude from the Bus Stop rest area is her grandfather, George Hodel.  Jay and Fauna finally met and Sepp (f/k/a Mr. Black Car) really stepped up his creepy AF Factor!

I Am The Night
“Dark Flower” (Episode 103)
February 11, 2019

Last week’s episode introduced us to more characters playing into Fauna’s evolving definition of self. She has to grapple with the fact that she’s not black despite being raised as mixed race her whole life. We met her step-grandmother, Corinna Huntington, kinda like a breathy, arty, odder Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company. Fauna learns more about her new-found family from Corinna and even has a creepy encounter with the man stalking her for years and the man who we know as Dr. Hodel in an art gallery. Jay is spiraling back into the depths of the Hodel case again and getting himself deeper into the mire.

TV Recap: I Am The Night – Some Stories Will Eat You Alive …

I Am The Night
“Pilot” (Episode 101)
January 28, 2018

I Am The Night, a six-episode period drama on TNT, premiered tonight. Like 2018’s successful run of the suspense thriller, The Alienist, I Am The Night is part of what TNT calls, “the TNT Suspense Collection.” The series is based on the life of Fauna Hodel and her 2008 autobiography, One Day She’ll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings of Fauna Hodel (co-written with J.R. Briamonte). The show stars India Eisley (as Fauna) and Chris Pine (as Jay Singletary), and is directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman).

TNT’s official synopsis of the show is, “Inspired by true events, I Am The Night tells the gripping story of Fauna Hodel (India Eisley), a teenage girl who is given away at birth, and grows up outside Reno, Nevada. Fauna lives more-or-less comfortably with the mysteries of her origin, until one day she makes a discovery that leads her to question everything. As Fauna begins to investigate the secrets of her past, she meets a ruined reported (Chris Pine), haunted by the case that undid him.

“Together they follow a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Los Angeles gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel (Jefferson Mays), a man involved in some of Hollywood’s darkest debauchery, and possibly, its most infamous unsolved crime.”
