Interesting night of TV with 2 series premieres, 1 season premiere and a bunch of new episodes of regular TV. Its almost as if we’re not in the cold wasteland of rerun hell. While I’m not particularly hot on 9-1-1, WAGS Atlanta or the X-Files, I know someone is out there (though doubtful, they like all 3 of those shows, that’s a pretty broad taste in TV).
No, for my time and money, I am The Librarians into Vikings into Knightfall and catch SEAL Team on DVR in the next day or so.
While there is still no new The Flash or DC’s Legends of Tomorrow to watch, there are new CBS procedurals so NCIS and Bull have clawed back into our What To Watch, for this week anyway. But, the thing we’re most exctied about is the series premiere of LA to Vegas, a ridiculous looking comedy starring Dylan McDermott that looks so bad its good. Also, Hunting Hitler returns for a season 3 premiere. Yes, there have been 3 seasons of people looking for an undead Hitler.
Happy New Year, Pop Culturists! Welcome to 2018. Thank goodness for The Gifted which returns tonight with new episodes. Also on tap, Season 22 of The Bachelor premieres, if that’s your thing (why is that your thing?!?), as well as college football bowls, great Twilight Zone and Breaking Bad marathon episodes.
Our final TV post of 2017 ends with recommendations of some of our favorite movies which happen to be on tonight. We are recommending Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (note the early 7:30pm start time), John Wick: Chapter 2, and for late night viewing, Apollo 13.
Thanks for joining us on our abbreviated 2017 ride and we look forward to venturing through the Pop Culture landscape with you in 2018!!!
Season 3 of the amazing Syfy show, The Magicians, begins on January 10. Today, NBC Universal released the first still photos of the new season! Take a look below at 21 pics from the season premiere, including several shots of Faran Tahir as “The Great Cock.” Interestingly, there is no Penny in these shots.
To catch you up, Season 2 ended with Ember killing Umber, Quentin killing Ember, a Plumber turning off all of the magic (except for Julia, she’s still got magic), and Eliot and Margo arguing over how to rule magic-less Fillory. Also, the Fairies are knocking on their kingdom’s door. Season 3 picks up with the quest to bring magic back.
The Magicians stars Jason Ralph (as Quentin Coldwater), Stella Maeve (as Julia Wicker), Olivia Taylor Dudley (as Alice Quinn), Hale Appleman (as Eliot Waugh), Arjun Gupta (as William ‘Penny’ Adiyodi), Summer Bishil (as Margo Hanson), Rick Worthy (as Dean Fogg), Jade Tailor (as Kady Orloff-Diaz), Brittany Curran (as Fen), and Trevor Einhorn (as Josh Hoberman).
Its all horrible. There is really really really nothing going on tonight. The best I’ve got is some really good reruns of Game of Thrones and that only takes you to 9:30 (the good episodes start at 7). Stay warm and go to bed early, friends.
Its The Librarians Wednesday, which means back to back new episodes!! Also, new Vikings and Lagertha’s having a no good, terrible, awful day. On Knightfall, the betrayals are coming hard and fast!!
So, Christmas is done so you’re basically out of the schmaltzy Holiday Specials phase but most of your shows are still on Winter Hiatus, What to do? Well, this week will surely be filled with 2017 Retrospectives but tonight, we’re recommending some history learning on PBS, a shitty Charlie Brown special on ABC and crazy, Christmas themed murder mystery shows on ID. Fun times!! Oh, and the Kennedy Center Honors!
The end of the year is a great time to take stock of where we are. Today, I’m letting you know my top new shows of the Fall television season. These shows are weekly installment shows (distinguished from “binge” shows where an entire season is made available at once a la Netflix or Hulu). Why differentiate? Because, at least for me anyway, I watch “binge” shows very differently from weeklies and the characteristics and criteria for what makes them great isn’t necessarily the same in the two categories.
Anyhoo, read on and let me know what you think. There are a couple of “obvious” choices here that you’ll see on other critics lists. There are several that I am sure you will not. But, hey, I’m me and this is my world so step inside my thinking a bit. Leave your thoughts and choices in the comments. I love discussing TV and why you think something is great … or not.
Without further ado, the Best New Show of the Fall Season is …
Slow night for TV so I suggest you watch Matt Smith in all his Doctor Who glory romp through his three Christmas specials. Elsewhere, Dean Cain plays host to some Christmas magicians, Sheryl Crow has a Christmas special, new Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Eric Idle explores the entire universe. In just 1 hour. Impressive.
