What To Watch – Thursday, December 21, 2017

Welcome to the first day of Winter. Your reward? Other than the A Charlie Brown Christmas and an ongoing Doctor Who marathon, there is very little on TV.   Bah humbug.

1st Choice:  Doctor Who. BBC America has been running a Doctor Who marathon the last couple of nights in a run up to the annual Christmas episode, which this year will feature Peter Capaldi’s final turn as the 12th Doctor (and Steven Moffat’s final turn as show runner and EP) and introduce us to the first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.  Tonight’s offering is of note because it is the two-part End of Time episode; this was the Christmas episode that ended David Tennant’s time as the 10th Doctor and introduced Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. Also, it re-introduced the Master and the Time Lords.  Good Stuff.  Spend the next 3 hours in the TARDIS!  The official episode description, “The Master (John Simm) is reborn on Christmas Eve, kicking off a battle with the Doctor that spans the ruins of London and the mysterious Immortality Gate. Elsewhere, the Ood issue an ominous warning as a shadow falls across the universe.” BBC America.

2nd Choice:   A Charlie Brown Christmas. Normally this would be my number one choice for the night BUT it was just on 3 weeks ago and its a pretty good Doctor Who airing sooo … there you go.  Of all the Charlie Brown Specials that air throughout the year, there is NONE greater than A Charlie Brown Christmas; watching Chuck bemoan the meaning of Christmas while his friends take a hipsterish apathy towards the true spirit of the Holiday. Its just amazing and that Tree. That sad, pathetic little Christmas tree. It give me all the feels.  ABC

3rd Choice: Inside the Actors Studio.   Host James Lipton sits down with Kristen Wiig.  Bravo

9pm Hour:

1st Choice:  Doctor Who. Continues on BBC America.

2nd Choice:  CMA Country Christmas.  “Reba McEntire hosts and performs on the eighth annual event, which also features Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan, CB30, Dan + Shay, Brett Eldredge, Alan Jackson, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Dustin Lynch, CeCe Winans, Trisha Yearwood and Chris Young.”  ABC

3rd Choice:   A Saturday Night Live Christmas Special.  Skits from holiday offerings of years past.  You know, when SNL was funny.  NBC

10pm Hour:

1st Choice:  Doctor Who. Continues on BBC America.

2nd Choice:  CMA Country Christmas. Continues on ABC.

3rd Choice: A Saturday Night Live Christmas Special. Continues on NBC.
