2018 San Diego Comic Con: Interview with Jason Ralph of The Magicians

2018 San Diego Comic Con
Day 3 (July 21, 2018)

At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, we got a chance to speak with the cast of  The Magicians. In this interview, we sat down with Jason Ralph (Quentin Coldwater) who spoke on a wide range of issues including who Bri-Guy is,  Quentin and Eliot’s relationship and bond, and the responsibility of playing on a show that handles such serious issues and how that resonates with its fans.

After the jump, check out transcribed excerpts from the interview with Jason, as well as video of the full interview!

On Quentin and Eliot’s relationship:

“As much as you can believe in soulmates, I think they probably are.”

On the new Alter Ego he’ll be playing when Season 4 begins:

“I can tell you I play this character named Brian, who I refer to as Bri-Guy. I think he has a shinier disposition than Quentin does. And that he spends 75% of his time on screen covered in blood.”
[Off Screen: His Own Blood?]
“Hard to say. [laughs]”

On playing the Beast in Season 3, Episode 11 (“Twenty-Three”):

“I wasn’t sure how that was going to go. I was a little worried about the performance aspect of it, I guess. I really hadn’t like rehearsed it cause I was a little scared of it.  And then showed up on the day and it all sort of just made sense. Put the costume on, put the right shoes on. Get a better hairstyle. [laughs] The Beast is a theatrical creature, right, which was fun. I do a lot of theater and so, it got to feel presentational in that way. He’s a person that allowed to take up space and fun to get to play that cause Quentin lives here, right, and I don’t think his energy has moved beyond a small sphere.  But, to play someone who relishes in the sheer amount of space that he claims as his own was really, was really fun.”
